The Final Sitting is another new irregular regular feature. From time to time I will be bothering asking people to tell what they would do for their last meal if they could choose such thing. The more awake of you will remember this from a previous post. This is a concept that has fascinated me since I stumbled across it on the Guardians, "Word of Mouth" food blog. And no two people I have spoken to about it since have given me anywhere near the same answers. So first up we have self styled tr

Another Elite Tech News podcast for y’all. I wasn’t able to call in on this one, but Mark “Rizzin” Hopkins, MG Siegler, Art Lindsey, and Steven Hodson made their voices heard. Topics: Give iPhones to kids, Web 2.0: Too many parties, not enough innovation?, Technology eventually leads to politics and economics, broadband bandwidth caps, and good ideas on how Twitter could make money. Also, I think Steven hit a new record for number of bleeped comments. Download the Podcast here This is

In the two months since leaving my former 9-5 gig: Things I Have Done: - picked up a cat from the Boston shelter (my last cat died as a result of the tainted Chinese pet food ingredients) - went to the Celtics championship parade (it has been 6 months since we’ve had a championship parade in Boston - the wait was worth it) - installed an attic fan (no easy task in my crawlspace sized attic) - vastly expanded my knowledge of the biotech scene in the Boston area (3 interviews so far) - unde

This sewage pipe is adjacent to a Gaza city sea-front restaurant, and less than 100 metres from a popular beach. “I think the sea probably is polluted. Sometimes I get strange white marks on my skin; but we come down to the beach every day because we have nowhere else to go.” Samer and his friends are hanging out on the beach in Gaza city, next to the old fishing harbour, and just about to jump into the sea. One of the boys holds a plastic bottle with several small fish and a tiny crab trapp

We just got home from a jaunt over to Croatia. I'd been to Zagreb earlier this year, so I asked Captain Squid, my Croatian expert, for a suggestion on where else to travel. He popped the idea of a trip to Istria. At first it sounded convenient - on the map it seems a lot closer than Dalmatia. But close is not close enough - between the train trip and the buses to get to our destination it was a grueling 18 hour trip. We took the overnight train to Rijeka, arriving at dawn, and then headed down

Jump to the full entry & travel map Cuyabeno, Ecuador CAUTION: THIS IS A LONG ENTRY!!! So, last time I wrote I was very nervous at the prospect of going into the jungle. We left our house in Quito at 8.30pm to take the taxi t

In many places the great river of grass that flows south from Okeechobee through the Everglades and out to Florida Bay is, depending on time and tide, ankle deep. But it is still navigable. The Seminoles and later the cracker Gladesmen criss-crossed the skinny-water labyrinth by poling in long narrow dugout skiffs. It is these historical canoes that Ron Hyde used for inspiration in designing his new Seminole Flats skiff. I spent time last week running the Glades with Hyde in a Seminole, a
